Yesterday I received a call from one of my buyers. He didn't want to go through with the accepted offer he had on a house. Simply put...he was experiencing buyer's remorse. I'm sure many of us have experienced this, either as the buyer or as the real estate agent.
The reason may have nothing to do with the inspection or financing or any other contingency in the offer to purchase. The reason may just be "it doesn't feel right."
You never know the response or reaction you're going to get from the listing agent when you make that call to let them know your buyer "wants out." But yesterday, I was the recipient of perhaps the most gracious reaction I've ever received. The seller's agent, while frustrated, showed a degree of compassion and admitted that she, too, had experienced "buyer's remorse" with her first house. She said to go ahead and forward the Cancellation and Mutual Release Agreement.
I think sometimes, especially in these times, emotions can get the best of us. But I was reminded yesterday of the importance of understanding, grace, and professionalism. I will never forget this agent's kindness and certainly hope to have the opportunity to work with her in the future. She's what we need more of in this world of real estate -- and in this world in general.

Peggy,
Sounds like a true lady....very nice of you to write such a nice piece about her...so I am thinking that there are two pretty special ladies here!
Lori -- What kind words! Thank you so much. Yes, Andrea is truly one of the most professional agents I've worked with. Just so refreshing. The best to you!
That's great.....a true professional. This is business, and we need to act business-like, but it's also going to be someone's HOME and we have to remember that.
Peggy, absolutely right. We need agents like her in this business and world also. I'm gald she understood the situation and didn't overreact. She seems very professional.
See every time , when I experience a bad agent, I laugh at their lack of professionalism, even after being in the industry for more than my age and talk big about their experience.
In my short RE profession, I have seen very few agents who are true professionals.
It is always wonderful to find other agents that understand when problems arise. Part of her reaction may also have been due to your good attitude and professionalism. Too many time we set ourselves up by being confrontational. Thanks for the reminder, work together for a solution not create more tension. Thanks for the post.
Thank you for sharing. It seems that the negative gets so much more exposure than the good things that agents do.
It is always refreshing to come across someone who makes a wonderful impression on us! Realtors are doing some wonderful things! There are some that care about more than the paycheck! Continue to do grat things!! Thank You for sharing a great story!
How nice it is when you run across someone who is compassionate, even when faced with losing money in the deal, Peggy. I just wanted to stop by and see how you were doing. Hope everything's fine.
Once again it proves that you catch more bees with honey than with vinegar. I noticed you mentioned that you're looking forward to working with her again in the future. That's the way this business should work all the time.
In this market you were truly lucky to have an understanding agent that was able to get the release from their seller. I tell all of my buyer clients that when they walk into the right house there will be an inner feeling that lets them know it's right, and it usually works. It's nice to know that there are agents that truly understand the service side of this business and not just the money side.
Karen -- Excellent point. I have to admit I was frustrated when the buyer called me, but Andrea sure put things in perspective!
Suma -- I hear ya! Sometimes I wonder how some agents stay in business!
Lois -- She did a great job reminding me how to react to this sort of news -- with dignity and professionalism.
Mark -- You are SO right. Trying to always stay and focus on the positive!
Judy -- It is very refreshing to meet agents like this one. She reminds me of the folks I've met here on ActiveRain. :)
Heather -- I am doing great, Heather, and hoping to resume work on my site soon. I will be in touch!!
Jon -- You are so right. I've been incredibly blessed in my career to work with more kind and compassionate people than not so kind and compassionate.
Ed -- I sure was lucky! I wish everyone could encounter an "Andrea" more frequently!
Peggy - The true professional knows that next time it could be their customer wanting out of the transaction. How would they want to be treated? Our industry is about the people, not the contracts. Nice post.
Lisa -- You are so right. That is something I try to remind myself of time and time again. Thank you for stopping by!
Of course she was gracious. It is a privledge to work with someone as wonderful and professional as you!!!
