Are You Holding Yourself Accountable for the Situation You're In?

I know I'm stating the obvious when I say the real estate market is tough these days. It's tough for sellers trying to sell their homes, it's tough for buyers trying to get pre-approved for a mortgage, and it's tough for Realtors® trying to make a living.

But maybe it's time to start holding yourself at least somewhat accountable for the situation you're in.

For sellers, if your house is sitting on the market with few, if any, showings and no offers, talk to your Realtor® about your options. Make it "the" house buyers want to see. Maintain the inside and the outside. Ask your Realtor® to provide you with an updated market analysis and price your house compellingly. Talk about strategy. And then listen to what they tell you, no matter how hard it is to hear.

For buyers, if you're having trouble getting approved for a mortgage, take the steps necessary to put yourself in a position to get approved. Talk to your lender about your options. Change your spending habits. Consider taking on a second job.

For Realtors®, if you have one or two listings or buyers or none at all -- get off the couch and do something about that. Make phone calls. Send out mailings. Read blogs. Write blogs. Read your real estate magazines -- they are full of information and ideas that can help put you in a better position in the business. Do open houses. I know there's a lot of debate as to whether or not open houses are really any benefit, but they get you out in front of buyers -- buyers who are looking to buy. Take floor time at your office. Think that's a waste of time because the phone's just not ringing? Then use that time to do any of the above listed activities. Go on tour and become familiar with the inventory in your market area. Go to sales meetings. Take classes.

For sellers, buyers and Realtors®, stop whining about the situation you are in. You have the ability to change it. Stop blaming the economy or our politicians or your boss.

There are opportunities for you to take steps to make things better for you and your family. Ultimately, you are responsible for you. Work to create the life you want. Be accountable.
